Mystery shopping skills valuable to any profession

While mystery shopping certainly helps improve operations for the businesses receiving reports, it also builds strong professional and personal skills for the shoppers themselves. The habits and expertise picked up during a mystery shopping career definitely seep into other facets of life and prepare shoppers well for anything that may come their way.

Successful shoppers understand the value of concise, direct communication. Being accountable to your mystery shopping company and the client is a huge part of the job. It's also crucial to be able to express exactly what you need from the staff who are being shopped. Delivering short speeches or using proper terminology is important.

Strong writing skills
As Mystery Shop Maven points out, taking notes, composing grammatically correct reports, proofreading and writing accurately are all skills acquired during mystery shopping. Many careers require strong writing skills, and creating reports is an excellent way to force yourself into the habit of frequently writing well.

Though some gigs do not require an exact arrival time, many ask that the shopper shows up within a given time frame. Plus, reports are due shortly after a shop is completed. Procrastinating or putting off responsibilities is not an option in the mystery shopper's world, if they want to continue earning an income. 

Accepting help
Mystery Shopper Magazine pointed out the unique quality that many shoppers develop over the course of their work: vulnerability. When a teammate or co-worker offers help, sometimes the instinct is to shrug them off. This can lead to tension in the workplace. It's OK to ask for and receive help if you don't know the answer to something. Mystery shoppers are expected to ask salespeople for assistance; it's not a bad habit to form.

Attention to detail
Almost any job description these days will ask that applicants have an eye for detail. This is no problem for a mystery shopper who has perfected the art of counting rings before a pick-up, noting how many times a server has refilled water glasses, recalling exactly what a concierge said about room upgrades and doing all of this inconspicuously.

Fast thinking
Any mystery shopper who tells you they've never had to think on their feet during a shop is probably making it up. The job requires swift reactions and the ability to be alert and ready to adapt at any moment. This sort of investment is admirable in many other realms of life.
