Mystery shopping: tools of the trade

One of the reasons mystery shopping is such a good job is that you probably don't have to purchase any tools to get started. A computer, smartphone and reliable transportation are all you need. Because most people already own the tools, mystery shopping is a great job for students, stay-at-home moms, seniors and really anyone. Most of the things you'll need you probably use every day already, however, if you don't and you want to be a successful mystery shopper, you might want to consider getting the following items.

A computer is probably the most important thing you'll need to have to be a mystery shopper. Mystery shoppers use their computers to find mystery shopping jobs, communicate with clients before and after the job, and write and send their reports. Mystery shoppers are often paid through PayPal or a service like PayPal so they need to have a computer to get access to the money they're making. Obviously, Internet access is a must. A high-speed connection will work best, but you should be able to get by with a slow connection.

Smartphones are an indispensable tool for mystery shoppers. Many mystery shoppers use their smartphone to take photos, record noises and conversations, and time their shops. Sometimes a client might ask a shopper to record something or photograph something, so while you could probably get by without a smartphone if you had to, sometimes you basically have to have one.

Mystery shoppers have to get to their jobs somehow. How they get there doesn't matter. If you you have a car, great, but some mystery shoppers use public transportation or ride a bike to their jobs. No matter what type of transportation you choose to use, just be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get their on time.
